Animal Microchips Linked to Cancer
Identification microchips injected into the necks of animals are supposed to be useful in recovering lost pets. But are they safe?
According to the U.S. FDA, potential health risks include “adverse tissue reaction”. This may include “swelling”, “infection”, “abscesses”, and “tumors”.
A new lawsuit against Merck & Co., Inc., maker of a microchip, says they are harmful. The lawsuit alleges that Merck’s pet microchip induces cancerous tumors in pets. According to the suit, the defendant’s cat developed cancer after getting a chip implanted. Apparently other animals have gotten cancer after getting chipped as well.
