Most people, if they had a choice, would try to avoid GMOs (genetically modified organisms) in their food.

Unfortunately for us, the food giant corporations have gone to a lot of trouble to ensure that we have to possible way of knowing whether the food we are all eating contains GMOs. The labeling of GMOs on food packaging in the US is illegal. If a company like Kelloggs decided to include a full disclosure label on their cereal boxes that stated, “contains genetically modified corn” they could actually be sued by the manufacturer and even face possible incarceration! It certainly would be best to try to avoid the GMO contaminants altogether and make an effort to know which companies we are choosing to support.

Here are five simple yet effective ways to decrease your contact with GMOs.

Buy Locally Produced Food

At this point, GMOs are only used by large multinational corporations who buy direct from large farms. Produce from local farmers are not yet genetically modified. Purchasing locally grown food supports not only your local farmers but also your health.

Buy Organically Grown Food

The organic certification process is still quite safe for ensuring your food is free of GMOs. This may not always be the case in the future, however.

Avoid the Top Four GMO Crops of Soy, Corn, Canola and Cottonseed

Most blended oils in North America contain canola and cottonseed. Try to purchase 100% extra virgin olive oil. Be aware, however, that unless it specifically states “Non-GMO” or some derivation on the label, it most likely contains GMOs.

Avoid Artificial Additives and Sweeteners

Did you know that aspartame is created using genetic modification? Even most vitamin C (asorbic Acid) and many B vitamins are created by genetic modification.

Look For the Non-GMO Label

If it does not state Non-GMO on the label, then email the manufacturer and ask if they use GMO feed. Consider contacting all of the manufacturers of the foods you eat on a daily or weekly basis to determine whether GMOs ingredients are utilized in the food.
