You Need a Healthy Thyroid for Beautiful Hair and Skin

Posted by on Oct 03 2008 | Uncategorized

If your hair turns gray and falls out or stays thick is dependent on your body having proper levels of thyroid hormones. New research has revealed that human hair follicles are direct targets of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4.

Human hair follicles in their growth phase were obtained from women between the ages of 40 and 69 with adequate thyroid levels. The follicles were cultured and treated with T3 and T4.

The results showed that both T3 and T4 significantly stimulate the synthesis of melanin in the follicle. Melanin is what gives pigment or color to the hair.

Hair that is brittle or has split ends has been observed to correlate with low thyroid levels. Some doctors diagnose low thyroid based solely on early graying of the hair and the loss of hairs from the outer ends of the eyebrows.

Thyroid problems can develop at any age. They usually appear slowly enough that they go unnoticed. At least 27 million Americans probably have an undiagnosed thyroid problem.

The thyroid is the master gland of metabolism. When it is not functioning properly it will affect every part of your well-being. Most particularly affected are weight, mental outlook, body temperature and energy levels.

Untreated hypothyroidism will increase your risk of serious health issues. Another symptom of hypothyroidism is weak heart beat. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include difficulty losing weight, weight changes, and muscle and joint pain. Depression and anxiety can also be symptoms of thyroid problems.

When your thyroid is not functioning properly the body will attempt to conserve energy by redirecting it from nonessential areas. This is why your hair and skin are among the first to go then your thyroid starts to malfunction. When thyroid function is low there is not enough raw building materials available to keep the nonessential parts of you at their best.

Be Careful With Plastic At Grocery Stores

Posted by on Oct 03 2008 | Uncategorized

PhotobucketOver 4 million credit card numbers were compromised by a security breach at the Hannaford Brothers grocery chain according to an announcement released by the company.

Approximately 1,800 connected cases of fraud have been reported.

Hannaford has warned customers to monitor their cards for any unexpected charges. No personal information except card numbers was exposed. Customers should beware of anyone claiming to represent Hannaford asking for any information.

Debit card holders are at much greater risk from fraud than credit card holders. Credit card companies will typically cover any fraudulent charges but it can be much more difficult to convince banks to reimburse fraudulent withdrawals.

The breach was detected on February 27 but Hannaford did not announce it until March 17. It has also not been revealed which stores were affected by this breach.
