Overcoming Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Posted by on Aug 22 2008 | Uncategorized

I have had carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms for years originating from one of my pregnancies. My symptoms never completely went away even after I wasn’t pregnant any more. During the time that I was pregnant, I would have done just about anything to find carpal tunnel relief…it was horrible!

Now that I have the beginnings of a carpal tunnel problem, one thing I am very careful about is making sure that I don’t do anything that might make my symptoms worse. The absolute KEY to dealing with carpal tunnel is doing whatever you can to make sure that you are not engaging in repetitive movements that will irritate the carpal tunnel.

When too much pressure builds up upon the median nerve that is located inside the carpal tunnel, you begin to experience carpal tunnel symptoms. Symptoms include pain and numbness that will get worse over time if steps are not taken to stop the inflammation. The median nerve shares the carpal tunnel space with nine tendons. Each of these nine tendons is surrounded by a sheath. These sheaths swell up from friction caused by repetitive movement of the wrist and this is what causes carpal tunnel syndrome.

Common treatment for carpal tunnel relief includes:

  • A wrist brace (day splint and night splint)
  • Anti-inflammatory medication (pain relief)
  • Surgery (last resort!)

Definitely try to avoid repetitive stress if at all possible, though. There are many ergonomic changes that you can make that will reduce the aggravation. Go to the effort to set up your workstation to be comfortable for your body size and work style. Take regular breaks throughout the day. Stay in good physical shape with regular exercise, a healthy diet, and keep a positive outlook on life.

I found a website that has an approach to carpal tunnel treatment that I like. Dr. Ian MacMorran is an orthopedic and hand surgeon. He is also the medical director of IMAK Corporation (creators of carpal tunnel relief products like the Pil-O-Splint® and Smart Glove®). These products seem to be exactly what anyone suffering from carpal tunnel symptoms needs to have! The best part? Your satisfaction is guaranteed in TWO ways. A product warranty and also the IMAK Comfort Guarantee! Any product is guaranteed for up to 1 year after the purchase date. If you aren’t getting the results you expected, simply return it to the store where you purchased it! Guarantees like this tell me that the product is going to give results – they don’t create guarantees like this otherwise!

I will definitely be remembering the Smart Glove and the other products designed by IMAK and will be recommending this treatment option for anyone I know who is experiencing carpal tunnel symptoms.

Michael Phelps – Did He Let His Fans Down?

Posted by on Aug 20 2008 | Uncategorized

PhotobucketMichael Phelps has signed a lucrative deal to promote Kellogg’s Corn Flakes and Frosted Flakes.

Basically, he will be using his celebrity status to push sugary, processed foods onto a generation of young people who already suffer from skyrocketing rates of obesity and diabetes.

Kids today need healthy role models who will not sellout to junk food promoters who have no problem trading fame for unethical profits.

Question: Does Phelps have a moral obligation to more carefully consider the consequences of his endorsements?

My opinion? Yes. I like Phelps as much as anyone else. He’s an extremely likeable guy who we all enjoyed watching succeed in Beijing. However, by endorsing Frosted Flakes cereal, he has now proven himself to be basically no different than anybody else who pushes unhealthy substances on American kids. Why couldn’t Phelps have found a healthy food product to endorse instead? I’ll tell you why…because cereal companies have much higher markups and have a lot more money to throw at celebrity endorsements.

We could even go so far as to say that Phelps has put his own profits ahead of the welfare of his millions of fans. While his fans get fat, Phelps gets rich.

Will the day come when Phelps realizes his mistake? Perhaps so. When his swimming days are done if he’s still eating and promoting junk food he will join his fans in experiencing a host of health problems. Hopefully, he’ll realize that processed sugar is not the “breakfast of champions.

This does not take away from the fact that Phelps earned those eight gold medals. He is an amazing swimmer but not such a good role model. It’s too bad because he could have been a true champion on a whole new level by promoting some healthy products instead.

What Does Michael Phelps Eat – Typical Michael Phelps Diet

Posted by on Aug 17 2008 | Uncategorized

Photobucket

Have you heard any of the buzz going around about what the typical daily food intake is for the new World Record-Setting Olympian Michael Phelps?

Apparently, Michael Phelps’ recipe for success is to eat 12,000 calories a day (4,000 per meal) of basically the highest fat content, processed foods he can get his hands on.
Eat, sleep and swim. That’s all I can do,” says Phelps.

Indeed…

Breakfast:

  • Three fried-egg sandwiches with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise
  • Two cups of coffee
  • 1 five-egg omelet
  • 1 bowl of grits
  • Three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar
  • three chocolate-chip pancakes
  • Lunch:

  • a pound of enriched pasta
  • two large ham and cheese sandwiches slathered with mayo on white bread
  • 1,000 calories in energy drinks
  • Dinner:

  • 1 pound of pasta
  • 1 entire pizza
  • 1,000 calories in energy drinks
  • By comparison, the average man of the same age needs to eat about 2,000 calories a day. Phelps is young and unbelievably active right now. I can only hope that he has the sense to adjust his diet as he ages and changes his activity levels or he will be almost guaranteed to be dealing with obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and probably several other health conditions as well.

What You Put On Your Skin is as Important as What You Put In Your Body

Posted by on Aug 15 2008 | Uncategorized

Your skin is your largest organ so it is important what you put on it. I am very careful about what I eat. I do not eat processed foods. I do not eat sugar. I eat a lot of organics and fruits and vegetables are a large part of my daily diet. Because I try so hard to take good care of myself on the inside, I have recently decided to make it a priority to find skin care products that are of the same quality as the foods I eat myself and I feed my family.

iDerma offers scientifically advanced skin care products that include anti-aging products, moisturizing creams, cleansers, sunscreens, mineral makeup, and much more.

Definitely worth a look…the founder of iDerma, Dr. Gregory Nikolaidis, has made this product line an exceptional one.

Tips for Smarter Travel – Part 9

Posted by on Aug 15 2008 | Uncategorized

    Tip #9: Get into nature

Wherever you end up…be sure to find a park, beach, lake, or forest where you can relax and soak up some nature. Getting outside and breathing the fresh air can make a big difference in your stress level.  Make a point to get into nature wherever you go.

Also, open your hotel room curtains before you go to sleep so that the morning light comes through and resets your circadian rhythm.  This makes sure that you are in sync with the local time. This is a therapeutic use of light and is key to getting your body in sync with reality. If your hotel room is pitch dark your brain will never get the signal that it’s time to produce those “wake me up hormones!”

Tips for Smarter Travel – Part 8

Posted by on Aug 15 2008 | Uncategorized

    Tip #8: Stay active!

Staying active is key to staying healthy on any trip — and not for the reasons you may suspect. One of the best advantages of exercise while away from home is that your body sweats out toxins. This will eliminate toxic chemicals through your sweat glands.

The key here is not necessarily to work your heart or muscles, but to sweat as much as possible while you replenish your body with healthy fluids.

Of course, exercise also reduces stress and enhances your mood.  That tends to make your travel a lot more enjoyable.

    Swiss Apple Stem Cell Serum

Posted by on Aug 15 2008 | Uncategorized

A new breakthrough patent pending active ingredient has been discovered that boosts the production of human skin stem cells, protects human skin stem cells from stress, and decreasing wrinkles thereby producing younger, fresher looking skin.

    Sound interesting? I thought so!

It’s called Emerge Skin Care Swiss Apple Stem Cell Serum and it promises to be the breakthrough that will win the war against aging.

It is created from a rare Swiss apple, paraben free, and never tested on animals.

    Press Release:

Scientific Breakthrough! Plant Stem Cells Protect Skin Stem Cells!

Emerge Labs fights age with science with their new Swiss Apple Stem Cell Serum

Emerge Labs presents a revolutionary technology that protects skin stem cells and combats chronological aging. The breakthrough patent pending active ingredient, PhytoCellTec Malus Domsestica, boosts the production of human skin stem cells, protects human skin stem cells from stress, thus decreasing wrinkles and producing younger, fresher looking skin.

Using a novel, patent-pending plant cell culture technology, Emerge Labs introduces PhytoCellTec – dedifferentiated callus cells from a rare Swiss apple that studies show protect skin stem cells thus promoting self-renewal capacity of the skin. Apple stem cells are rich in epigenetic factors and metabolites that assure the longevity of skin cells. The application of plant cell cultures to maintain the function of skin stem cells is a breakthrough in anti-aging.

Emerge Labs is the brainchild of skincare guru, Cleo Londono, the director of Metamorphosis Day Spa in New York City.

Tips for Smarter Travel – Part 7

Posted by on Aug 15 2008 | Uncategorized

Tip #7: Seek out the healthiest food you can find

Once you arrive at your destination, don’t run to the local all-you-can-eat processed food bar.  Find a Whole Foods or even just a regular grocery store so you can buy some fresh produce. Even if you can’t find organic, just get something fresh. Non-organic produce is still better than anything processed.

Even without a refrigerator,  you can still load up on oranges, melons and a few fresh items that will last a day or two without refrigeration. For those times when I’m completely out of fresh produce options, I like to buy almond milk and puffed kamut cereal, then I stir some SunWarrior protein into a bowl of kamut to make a high-protein cereal snack. It isn’t raw, and it’s not fresh, but it’s not bad for food on the road. It certainly beats the $15 scrambled eggs offered by your hotel’s room service menu (which are probably scrambled on Teflon pans, by the way…)
