Have you heard any of the buzz going around about what the typical daily food intake is for the new World Record-Setting Olympian Michael Phelps?

Apparently, Michael Phelps’ recipe for success is to eat 12,000 calories a day (4,000 per meal) of basically the highest fat content, processed foods he can get his hands on.
Eat, sleep and swim. That’s all I can do,” says Phelps.

Indeed…

Breakfast:

  • Three fried-egg sandwiches with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise
  • Two cups of coffee
  • 1 five-egg omelet
  • 1 bowl of grits
  • Three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar
  • three chocolate-chip pancakes
  • Lunch:

  • a pound of enriched pasta
  • two large ham and cheese sandwiches slathered with mayo on white bread
  • 1,000 calories in energy drinks
  • Dinner:

  • 1 pound of pasta
  • 1 entire pizza
  • 1,000 calories in energy drinks
  • By comparison, the average man of the same age needs to eat about 2,000 calories a day. Phelps is young and unbelievably active right now. I can only hope that he has the sense to adjust his diet as he ages and changes his activity levels or he will be almost guaranteed to be dealing with obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and probably several other health conditions as well.

    2. My husband and I were just having the same conversation the other day. I guess that is the reason why some ex-athletics are so overweight once they stop playing.
